I’ve always found myself quite perplexed at the ability of massive, metal killing machines to leap on a motorbike and happily ride off to their next murder.
The obvious question was how?! The canon weights of Terminator models isn’t small!
- T-600: ~800 lbs (Expanded universe and Terminator Salvation lore)
- T-800: 400 lbs (Explicitly stated by Sarah Connor in Terminator: Dark Fate)
- T-888: 640 lbs (Explicitly stated in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles)
- T-850 & T-X: circa 2,000 lbs (Arnold Schwarzenegger noted in the Terminator 3 DVD commentary)
- T-1000: Highly Variable (Canonically debated. Mass density would realistically weigh closer to 1,500 lbs)
- Rev-9: >600 lbs (Unspecified in canon, highly dense)
So how do these machines manage to engage with items in the real world without destroying them? Let’s look at the realistic physical limit of some of the items we’ve seen Terminatrors interact with:
- Motorcycle Suspension: Realistic Limit 400 – 450 lbs. The suspension would immediately bottom out. Handling would be sluggish, steering nearly impossible.
- Helicopter Skid: Minimal Unilateral Capacity. Applying 400 to 1,500 lbs to a single exterior skid would drastically shift the center of gravity, causing an uncontrollable roll in the aircraft.
- Passenger Car Seat: ~250 – 300 lbs. The seat brackets would bend or break. The chassis would lean heavily, ruining tire alignment and making for a particularly challenging drive.
- Wooden Stairs: ~300 lbs per step. The concentrated footprint of a 600+ lb endoskeleton would cause the wooden tread to crack or fail.
- Residential Flooring: ~40 lbs per square foot. The dynamic impact of a heavy Terminator walking would bow joists and snap floorboards.
- Household Furniture: ~250 – 300 lbs. Standard desk chairs, bed frames, and couches would buckle or permanently deform under sustained weight.
So where have we seen these4 limits broken? Loads of places!
- The Terminator (1984): The T-800 casually rides a Honda CB750 motorcycle and drives a standard station wagon. The vehicle’s suspension does not bottom out and the car’s chassis does not sag noticeably to the driver side.
- The Terminator (1984): The T-800 walks up the wooden stairs of a residential flophouse and the Alamo Sport Shop without the treads bowing, groaning or cracking under the concentrated footstep weight.
- Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991): The T-800 rides a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy while carrying heavy weaponry and a young John Connor. The motorcycle handles perfectly and the suspension remains uncompressed.
- Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991): The T-1000 hangs its entire mass on the outside skid of a police helicopter mid-flight without throwing off the aircraft’s center of gravity or causing a fatal roll.
- Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003): The heavily armored T-850 drives an Indian Chief motorcycle and rides in a standard veterinary truck, again without suspension sag or tyre deformation.
- Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003): The T-X and T-850 engage in close-quarters combat inside a bathroom. They are thrown against standard tiled walls and fixtures, which merely dent or crack instead of completely pulverizing under the impact of literal tons of metal.
- Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009): T-888 models regularly sit in standard desk chairs, sleep on domestic mattresses and traverse second-story residential floors without crushing the furniture or falling through the floorboards.
- Terminator Genisys (2015) & Dark Fate (2019): T-800 models integrate into normal society, sitting on standard household furniture, leaning against drywall and riding in small passenger vehicles without breaking seat brackets or pulling the vehicle’s alignment.
Am I being too pernickety about this? I thought sci-fi had to have a degree of verisimilitude?
